What Should Be Considered?
- Water Quality Requirements
When a Wastewater Treatment System is designed, it must be designed with the water quality requirements in mind. This starts with how you can effectively and quickly remove contaminants.
While a well-planned design focuses on filtration, the pre-separation process before the water enters the system is extremely important to optimal performance. When pre-separation is included in the initial design, a cleaner processed water will minimize maintenance costs providing longer filter life, fewer pump failures, reduced sediment build up in the coil of the pressure washer, and controlled chemical consumption (i.e. coagulants, which separate the solids within the water) reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
- Water Demand
The expected water flow rate must be considered to ensure that the Water Treatment System is sized correctly.
For example, each pressure washer may consume 4-5 gallons per minute (GPM) and an analysis of your washing processes is critical to discern the volume of water currently moving through your facility to ensure the system is scaled to your facility’s needs.
- Separation Requirements
Adequate separation is a vital part of the pre-treatment process aiding in removing as much oil and suspended solids prior to the water entering the Water Treatment System. This reduces the stress on the system and ultimately results in a better output of treated water.
What Happens When These Factors are Not Considered?
When the facility’s wash needs are not taken into consideration, the Water Treatment System will be inadequate. It will not produce treated water of sufficient quality and the processed water from the system can produce a foul smell.
Inadequate equipment and insufficient quality leads to unsatisfied customers, unfinished jobs, and higher maintenance costs.
All components of the system are crucial to the overall performance. Proper pre-treatment will help remove most of the floating oil and grease. Heavy hydrocarbons will be removed before entering the Water Treatment System. Any suspended solids will ultimately settle to the bottom of the separator.
The result of the pre-treatment will prevent the Water Treatment System from having to work as hard, resulting in less contaminants to treat ensuring better quality of the processed or treated water produced by the system.
